Applause Africa Magazine presented its fourth annual African Diaspora Awards at the Gerald Lynch theater in Manhattan.
This awards show honors individuals who are excelling in various fields of work. It also honors those working towards the advancement of Africans in the Diaspora and in Africa. This year’s honorees received awards in nine categories including community leadership, advocacy, music, acting and entrepreneurship.
Co-founders,Debo Folorunsho and Michael Ikotun say they started the award show to take the stories of leaders in the African community, from the pages of the magazine, to an event where they could be honored for their work.
“We figured how can we connect our audience with the people they read about,” said Folorunsho. “We said lets have a live event and lets celebrate people who inspire us , who we’ve interviewed , people that are moving the African agenda forward. People in the diaspora that have achieved within the year,” he said.
The award show, which takes place in mid-Novmber each year, is also a way for Africans from all over the diaspora to connect and celebrate. Folorunsho and Ikotun say the award show is an extension of their magazine’s mission, which is to empower, celebrate and connect Africans all over the world.
