Island Voice’s Hip Hop Chess Tournament started in 2008 as a summer event to help youths and teens strengthen their minds and decision making skills.  Chess is a patient game that requires the player to plan ahead and calculate a plan for their next move.  Through Island Voice’s Hip Hop Chess Tournament, we teach the youth how to apply the game of chess in their lives.  The youth chess tournament is for youths of all ages, we offer lessons and we end with a tournament.  In the past we have partnered with professional chess organizations such as Chess In The Schools, that serve as judges for our tournaments.  We introduced the idea of mixing Hip Hop with the chess tournament as a way of incorporating entertainment while the youths play chess. The music always adds a fun and exciting environment to the game.

We also incorporated different types of music such as Punk and Pop music.

We also partner with local Staten Island organizations and churches for collaborations and sponsorship opportunities.
